Students will:
Recognize and identify the suffix -s in books.
Understand that -s can indicate plural nouns or present-tense verbs.
Read and find -s words in texts at their instructional level.
Apply their understanding in reading and writing activities.
Lesson Structure
1. Warm-Up - Fundations Focus
Introduce:
Show words on the board (e.g., dog, cat, run, jump) and ask:
“What happens when we add -s?”
Discuss plural words vs. verbs with -s.
Mini Activity:
Have students “hunt” for -s in a short passage projected on the board.
Full Class Big Book Read Aloud
Read F&P big book with class. Have students raise hand when they see a suffix -s and have students take turns placing a Post-it note on the suffix.
2. Small-Group Guided Reading Rotations
Students will rotate through four centers while teacher works with small groups.
Teacher-Led Guided Reading (Differentiated Groups)
Select leveled books that contain words with the -s suffix.
Before reading: Have students preview the text and find words with -s.
During reading:
Support decoding and fluency.
Discuss whether the -s words are plural or verbs.
After reading:
Students highlight -s words in their copy of the text.
