Lesson Topic: Fundations – Introducing lowercase letters l and h

 

Grade: Kindergarten

 

Objectives:

1.     Students will be able to identify the letters “l” and “h,” and words that begin with these letters.

2.     Students will be able to say the sounds of the letters “l” and “h.”

3.     Students will be able to demonstrate fine motor skills by forming letters with Wikki Sticks and tracing them in their student notebooks. 

4.     Students will be able to engage in interactive learning to reinforce letter recognition and sounds. 

 

Materials:

·      Fundations Large Sound Cards

·      Standard Sound Cards

·      Chart Paper and Markers

·      Wikki Sticks and Worksheet

·      Fundations Student Notebooks and Pencils

·      Smartboard

 

Procedure:

 

1.     Warm-Up: Sound Cards

-       Show large sound cards for review. For example, say, “A, apple, /a/” while showing the card.

-       Lead the class in echoing each letter, keyword, and sound together.

2.     Letter Identification

-       Use standard sound cards. Call on individual students to select one card, say the letter, keyword, and sound aloud, and have the class echo it.

3.     Introduction of New Letters

-       Introduce "l" and "h."

-       Review the sounds.

-       Ask students to brainstorm words that begin with "l" and "h." Record their answers on chart paper.

4.     Hands-On Activity: Forming Letters

-       Transition students to their tables.

-       Distribute paper with typed "l" and "h."

-       Provide Wikki Sticks for students to form the letters.

5.     Handwriting Practice

-       Students use the Student Notebooks to trace and write "l" and "h."

-       Encourage them to color the associated pictures when finished.

 

6.     Interactive Smartboard Game

-       Bring students back to the carpet for an engaging and interactive game reinforcing the sounds and recognition of "l" and "h."

 

Differentiation:

1.     Provide extra support for students during independent work.

2.     Provide extra resources and materials for students who need more practice understanding letter formation before writing.

3.     Use crayons to make “skyline” blue, and “grass line” green when writing letters.  Use highlighters for students to trace if needed.

 

Assessment:

1.     Observe student participation during sound card review and brainstorming exercises.

2.     Monitor accuracy of Wikki Stick formation and handwriting in Fundations Student Notebook.

3.     Assess comprehension and engagement during smartboard activity.
