Differentiated assignments: Differentiated assignments will be offered to students based on their proficiency levels.
Meaningful activities integrating lesson concepts with language practice activities are planned and prepped, such as creating sentences and group discussions. These meaningful activities that integrate lesson concepts are:
Sentence scramble activity
Phrasal verb charades
Picture story creation
Phrasal verb bingo
Building Background
Begin by discussing with students their experiences with using verbs in sentences in their
everyday lives. Encourage them to share examples of actions they perform regularly and how they describe those actions. Relate these examples to the concept of phrasal verbs.
“Can anyone tell me about a time when you had to look for information on the internet?
“What did you look up?
“Have you every turned off a light switch at home?”
“When was the last time you ran into a friend unexpectedly?”
Review previously learned concepts related to verbs, such as action verbs and linking verbs. Explain how phrasal verbs are a combination of verbs and particles that convey specific meanings. Relate phrasal verbs to the boarder category of verbs that students have learned in the past.
“Remember when we learned about different types of verbs? How do phrasal verbs fit into that classification?
“We’ve talked about verbs that describe actions. How are phrasal verbs similar to or different from those verbs?”
Highlight key vocabulary by defining and discussing the meaning of phrasal verbs and specific examples. Use visuals and examples to help reinforce understanding. Provide opportunities for students to practice using the vocabulary in context through activities and discussions.

Comprehensible Input
Speak at a moderate pace and enunciate words clearly to ensure students can understand. Avoid using idioms, contractions, etc. that may confuse students. Use shorter sentences and provide pauses to allow students time to process information. When introducing phrasal verbs, I will use clear and simple language to explain their meanings. For example, I will say “A phrasal verb is a combination of a verb and another word.” ‘Pause’. “Like a preposition or an adverb.” ‘Pause’. “That changes the meaning of the verb.”
Clearly articulate the purpose and steps of academic tasks to ensure students understand what is expected of them. Break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps and provide examples or models to illustrate expectations. Before the sentence scramble activity, I will explain the task by saying, “In this activity, you will receive sets of words containing phrasal verbs. Your task is to unscramble the words that form complete sentences using the phrasal verbs correctly. You can work individually or with a partner. Let’s look at an example together before you get started.”
Incorporate modeling, visuals, hands-on activities, demonstrations, and gestures to make content concepts clear to students. These techniques provide multiple entry points for understanding and cater to diverse learning styles. During the phrasal verb charades activity, I will demonstrate an example by acting out a phrasal verb without speaking and allow students to guess the verb. I will also use visuals such as flashcards or drawings to reinforce the meanings of phrasal verbs. I will encourage students to use gestures or body movements to convey the actions associated with each phrasal verb. This multi-sensory approach will help reinforce understanding and engagement with the lesson content.
Strategies
Offer various strategies such as predicting, organizing, summarizing, and categorizing to help students engage with the lesson content. For teaching phrasal verbs, one effective strategy could be categorizing, where students group phrasal verbs based on their meanings or usage patterns. For this lesson, I will use the strategy of categorizing. After introducing a set of phrasal verbs, I will ask students to categorize them into groups based on their meanings. For example, phrasal verbs that related to actions, emotions, etc. This activity will help students identify patterns and better understand the meaning of phrasal verbs.
Provide scaffolding support to students by offering the right amount of assistance to help them progress from their current level of understanding to a higher level of understanding. Scaffolding techniques may include providing models, sentence frames, or graphic organizers to support language production. For ELLs with lower proficiency levels, sentence frames will be provided to help them construct sentences. Such as “I _____ the lights before leaving the room.”
Incorporate various questions that require students to analyze, evaluate, and apply their understanding of phrasal verbs. This can include questions that prompt students to compare and contrast phrasal verbs, predict their meanings in different contexts, or justify their usage.
Compare and contrast: “How is the meaning of ‘turn off’ different from ‘turn on’? Can you think of sentences where you would use each of these phrasal verbs?
Predicting: “Based on the context of this sentence, what do you think the phrasal verb means in this sentence?”
Justifying: “Why do you think the writer chose the phrasal verb in this sentence? “
Interactions
Incorporate various grouping configurations such as pairs, small groups, or large groups to encourage interaction between students, and students and teacher. Some examples are, think pair share, small group discussions, etc. where students can pair up to discuss examples of how to use phrasal verbs or small groups must work together to create sentences that have phrasal verbs.
Students will work with other students with various language proficiency in groups to encourage peer support and language practice. This configuration allows student collaboration on activities such as sentence creation and charades.
After asking questions, even if students raise their hands, provide further time for students to process the information and to think of an answer.
Recognize that students may need clarification or support in their L1 to fully understand key concepts. Opportunities will be provided for students to ask questions in their L1. Bilingual dictionaries will be provided to students who need further support.
Practice/Application
Index cards will be given to students will examples of phrasal verbs. Students will be instructed to use the phrasal verb on the index card and create sentences on their own or with a partner. Sentences frames or templates will be provided to support students who need extra support. Students can write their sentences on small whiteboards.
Sentence scramble activity: Provide students with sets of words containing phrasal verbs. Students work individually to unscramble the words and form complete sentences using the phrasal verbs correctly.
Phrasal verbs charades: Students will be divided into teams. One student from each team acts out a phrasal verb without speaking, while the rest of the team guesses the phrasal verb.
Phrasal Verb Bingo: Create bingo cards with different phrasal verbs written in the squares. Call out sentences containing phrasal verbs but skip over the phrasal verb in the sentence. Students will have to fill in the blank using the options on their Bingo board.
Index Card Creation: Students will be given index cards with a phrasal verb on it, as well as small whiteboards and markers. Students will have to write sentences using the phrasal verbs on the index cards.
Lesson Delivery
The lesson will begin with reviewing background knowledge and a brief introduction to phrasal verbs. Students will then be introduced to key vocabulary and their definitions prior to any activities. The teacher will provide examples of phrasal verbs in sentences, and a class discussion will occur to discuss each phrasal verb and how it is used in the sentences provides.
To support content objective, students will participate in different activities that are engaging and effective. First, students will be provided index cards with phrasal verbs on them. Students will have to write sentences using those phrasal verbs provided. Students will also participate in phrasal Bingo where students will have to fill in the blank of the sentences read aloud with the options on their Bingo boards.
To support language objectives, the above activities will also support language objectives while speaking during class discussions and writing sentences using phrasal verbs.
Ensuring students are engaged throughout the lesson is essential to productive learning. Playing fun games, and participating in fun activities ensures students are engaged, learning, and also having fun. One specific game that students will be engaged for is the Phrasal verb charades. Also, using sentences, examples, and scenarios that students relate to will also ensure students are engaged for 90-100% of the lesson. Providing different supports, and hands on activities is another helpful way to ensure students are engaged.
Pacing lessons has a lot to do with student feedback, and going off how the students are engaged in the lesson. If there are parts of the lesson that students seem to be enjoying and are engaged, this part of the lesson can go on for a bit longer. If there are parts of the lesson that students don’t seem interested in or engaged, then the teacher will move onto the next activity to ensure they keep their students’ attention.
The lesson will begin with a brief introduction to phrasal verbs, providing clear definitions and examples.
Students will then be engaged in interactive activities such as Bingo, Charades, and class discussions to reinforce understanding.
Sufficient time for hands-on practice and application of phrasal verbs through activities like games and role-plays will be created.
Teacher will monitor students’ progress and adjust the pace as needed to ensure all students have opportunities to participate and grasp the concepts.
The lesson will end with a brief review and reflection on key concepts.
Review/Assessment
Students will be provided a worksheet that will assess their understanding of key vocabulary and content concepts. Part one of the worksheet will be a matching activity that students need to complete. Students will have to match key vocabulary terms with their definitions. In part two of the worksheet, students will have to fill in the blank with provided phrasal verbs in the word bank. In part three, students will be provided different phrasal verbs and will have to write sentences on their own using the phrasal verbs they were given.
Students will receive feedback throughout the entire lesson from teachers. Immediate feedback ensures students notice their mistakes and will be more aware of it. Throughout the discussions, index card activity, Bingo, charades, etc. students will provide feedback as needed. Students will also be provided feedback on their worksheet, and it will be reviewed as a class so students can hear the explanation for each question/answer and will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Extension/Homework
Extension Activity: Phrasal Verb Booklet: Students will create a booklet containing phrasal verbs they have learned in the lesson. Each page of the booklet will feature one phrasal verb, including its’ definition and example sentences. This activity encourages creativity and deepens students understanding of phrasal verbs. It will also be a resource that students can refer to when needed.
Extension Activity: Online Phrasal Verb Quiz/Activity: Students will be provided a link to an online phrasal verb activity that they will have to complete.

Homework: Phrasal Verb Scavenger Hunt: Students will have to find as many phrasal verbs as possible in real-life context out of the classroom. This can be completed by using newspapers, magazines, online articles, etc. Students will create a list of all of the phrasal verbs they found and create a sentence using that phrasal verb.
Section II: Lesson Reflection/Commentary
After reflecting on this lesson plan, I noticed there are aspects of this lesson plan that makes it successful but there is also some room for refinement and improvement. This lesson plan focuses on teaching seventh graders about phrasal verbs. This lesson included teaching English Language Learners as well as general education students. This lesson plan was created to ensure all students will be engaged and students will receive further support when needed, while also learning the important aspects of this topic.
This lesson included a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles and to promote language development. Visuals, group discussions, and peer collaboration were effectively utilized to reinforce key concepts and facilitate understanding of phrasal verbs. For example, the use of visuals such as flashcards and Bingo boards helped make the concepts more accessible to students. Group discussions and partner work provided opportunities for students to engage in meaningful dialogue, share their perspectives, and learn from each other. These strategies enhanced the learning experience while also fostering a sense of community within the class.
There are always areas for improvement within lessons. It’s imperative for teachers to always reflect on lessons to see what they can do better next time and to find areas that didn’t go exactly as planned. One area of improvement is to provide sufficient wait time for student responses during class discussions and activities. Since there is a lot of group and partner work during this lesson, the teacher can reinforce students to stay quiet and let all students have the chance to come up with an answer on their own before sharing. There is also an opportunity for more differentiation within this lesson. Next time, additional support and enrichment activities can be tailored to students’ diverse needs to ensure all learners are adequately support in the learning process.
Overall, this lesson is effective, and students have opportunities to engage in multiple activities to reach more students individual learning styles. Students will have fun participating in the games such as Bingo and Charades, while also learning and applying instruction. Students will also be speaking, writing, etc. to focus on language objectives. By addressing the areas of improvement, future practices will aim to be more inclusive, so all students have the potential to master phrasal verbs and enhance their language proficiency.
